Volunteer Spotlight: Memoona

At Nourish, we have so many incredible volunteers! We sat down with new volunteer Memoona to find out what inspires her to be a part of the Nourish team.

Q: What drew you to get involved with Nourish?

Nourish! When I first saw the name on the website, I was fascinated about what it offered and how I could be a part of it. I was impressed by the variety of meals available for youngsters. They were quick and filling. I wanted to assist the school's healthy eating initiative by offering culturally diverse meal options.

Q: Why are you passionate about school food?

School lunch is crucial to the health and well-being of students. As a Lunch Monitor, I had the opportunity to closely watch children's lunch and snacks, which encouraged me to promote nutritional education and healthy eating habits among Nova Scotia youngsters. I've always encouraged families and children to eat home-cooked nutritious meals, as well as healthy lunch and snack options that are minimally processed. A well-nourished body ensures a well-nourished mind.

Q: What initiatives/work with Nourish are you most proud of?

There is no doubt that Halifax is on its way to becoming one of Canada's most multicultural cities. According to the most recent census data, Halifax's visible minority population is rapidly expanding. Nourish’s initiative to incorporate culturally diverse recipes to its platform makes me proud.

Q: What is your favorite vegetable or fruit and why?

My favorite fruit is Banana. There are plenty of reasons to love bananas. They're convenient to transport as a snack, taste enjoyable, and are high in natural sugars and vitamins. Banana not only keeps me energized; it also helps improve my mood due to their high serotonin levels. As for vegetables, I often eat carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. They are not only tasty but also very good for health.
